ABSTRACT
Narcissism is part of ordinary human development and of human interaction throughout life, but it can also be the source of severe pathology. In these seminars we will explore the concept of narcissism, which has become one of the central concepts in a psychoanalytic understanding of human growth and development and in its re-emergence in subsequent human interaction and relationships. It is also an important factor to be taken account of in thinking about clinical technique.
Course Objectives:
  1. We will look to understand narcissism as a normal stage of early infantile development and how it reappears throughout the vicissitudes of life, whether that be for the individual or in intimate relationships.
  2. We will look at how narcissistic states of mind can be the root of more severe psychopathology.
  3. We will consider how clinical technique needs to take account of the nature of those clients/patients who function primarily with narcissistic states of mind
